The Canal Tour Experience
The Santa Margarita canals are best seen from the water. We run through the basics on the pontoon, you step aboard a 4.3 m boat with a Mercury 15 hp engine and you take the helm for 90 minutes. No licence, no previous experience.
Fifteen kilometres of canals cut into the old marshes at the mouth of the Grau, around sixteen hundred moorings and houses that open straight onto the water. From the boat you see what the street doesn't show you: the back gardens, the boats tied up at the front door, the comings and goings of the marina in the late afternoon.
The canals open out into the bay. Cap de Creus Natural Park lies two and a half miles off — it isn't part of this route, but you get a clear view of the headland from the entrance. Head out after seven and you come back with low sun and flat water.
"You take the helm. We show you just enough to head out relaxed."
What's different about going out through the canals
No licence, no skipper on board and a route you can't do on foot. Here's what it actually looks like.
You take the helm
No qualification needed. We go over the throttle, the steering and how to come alongside in five minutes on the pontoon, and after that you set the pace and decide where to stop.
You only see it from the water
The canals make sense once you're on them: from the road you see walls, from the boat you see back gardens, private pontoons and the marina opening up at every bend.
Houses with the boat at the front door
Villas and houses with their own mooring on both sides of the canal. Each stretch has its own style, and some of the boats tied up there cost more than the house.
It works with children
Canal water is always flat and you go slowly, so it's a calm outing. Life jackets included for everyone on board.

Discover Santa Margarita Marina
Santa Margarita is a residential marina built on the former marshlands at the mouth of the Grau. Fifteen kilometres of navigable canals wind through it from end to end.
It is located right in Roses Bay, just to the left of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park and very close to the impressive coastline of Cap de Creus, giving it a privileged natural setting.
The network holds around sixteen hundred moorings and houses with direct access to the water. The boats you'll pass range from four-metre inflatables up to twenty metres, which is as long as the canals take.
