Cala Montjoi is one of the most beautiful coves in the Bay of Roses, within the Cap de Creus Natural Park. Famous for once hosting the elBulli restaurant, it’s ideal for snorkelling thanks to its transparent waters and rocky seabeds. And the best way to enjoy it without parking queues is to arrive by boat.
Where Cala Montjoi is and why it’s special
Cala Montjoi sits in the Bay of Roses, around 7 km from the centre, within the Cap de Creus Natural Park. It’s not a crowded beach: it’s small, with limited road access and scarce parking, which keeps it relatively peaceful.
Its waters are a transparent blue over rocky seabeds that slope gently, a natural refuge for marine life. Getting there is part of its charm: each visit feels like a small discovery.
elBulli: the legend that put Cala Montjoi on the map
Ferran Adrià’s elBulli was one of the world’s best restaurants for years, and its location at Cala Montjoi was no accident: the cove’s isolation and surroundings were central to its identity.
Today elBulli1846 operates as a museum-space and gastronomic research centre. Though it no longer serves meals, its legacy still draws visitors from around the world to this corner of the Costa Brava.
Getting there by boat from Roses, no licence needed
The road to Cala Montjoi exists, but parking is sparse and fills up in summer. We depart from Marina de Santa Margarita, in Roses’ channels, with licence-free boats you can pilot yourself or let us take the helm.
In about 20 minutes you’re sailing to the cove with views of the whole coast. Licence-free rental starts at €70/hour, and if you prefer something more relaxed we run private excursions where we tell you about the cove, its waters and setting.
Snorkelling and practical tips
Snorkelling here is excellent: rocky seabeds with posidonia, rock fish and the occasional curious octopus, with very good visibility. The best period runs May to September; in spring or autumn a thin wetsuit is welcome.
Anchor carefully to avoid the protected posidonia and respect the Natural Park rules: don’t collect rocks or shells, keep your distance from wildlife and, if you see litter, pick it up.
