Cala Murtra in Roses: the tranquil cove best enjoyed by boat

Cala Murtra is one of those coves almost nobody sets foot on. Hidden on the Roses coast, with clean waters and barely a crowd, it’s perfect if you want peace and water quality. The reason for its calm: land access is awkward. That’s why, at Experience Boat, we make it a must-stop on our outings.

What Cala Murtra is and why it’s special

Cala Murtra is a small natural cove on the Roses coast, in the Punta Falconera area, near Almadrava. It’s not large, but that’s its charm: while other beaches fill with sunbathers, here there’s space, quiet and clear water that calls you in.

It’s an undeveloped cove, in its natural state, because the walking path is difficult and that keeps it away from mass tourism. The mood is laid-back and calm, drawing people who come to reconnect with the sea rather than look for services.

Why reaching it by boat is the best option

If you try to get there on foot, you quickly understand why it stays so peaceful: no easy parking, no beach bar, and a long, uneven path. Good for nature, not so much for your comfort.

So the boat is the natural way in. We leave Santa Margarita and in about 10 minutes we anchor in clear, shallow water, ideal for dropping anchor and settling in. A licence-free rental from €70/hour gets you there in minutes, or you can join a private excursion if you’d rather we handle the boat.

Swimming and snorkelling in clean water

Once anchored, the water speaks for itself: transparency, a pleasant temperature and rocky seabeds full of life. Cala Murtra offers quiet snorkelling: small fish, aquatic plants and that feeling of an aquarium without glass.

Don’t expect coral reefs: it’s pure, discreet Mediterranean nature, which is exactly what you come here for. With mask, snorkel and fins you slip into a corner almost no one visits.

Practical tips for your outing

Tramuntana: in Roses the north wind rules. Cala Murtra sits relatively sheltered, but it’s worth checking the forecast; on strong-wind days, save it for another time. For anchoring, sand and rock hold well: set anchor a few metres out and pay out the chain properly.

There are no services, so come self-sufficient: water, shade, sunscreen and a towel. And respect the place — it’s a pristine cove because we look after it —: leave no litter and, if you see any, pick it up.
